04 Apr ABP inspires Newham students in learning Chinese lion dance

Students at a Newham school have been getting some expert lessons in traditional Chinese lion dancing thanks to Royal Albert Dock developer ABP.

The dance, usually seen at Chinese celebrations and festivals, is performed with a colourful lion’s head.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales, ABP Vice Chairman Nancy Xu and London Executive Director John Miu visited Kingsford Community School to present a lion dance costume and some Mandarin books to the school.

The school based in Beckton is the first Confucius Classroom in London, it is also a specialist language centre.

The school was one of the first in the country to introduce Mandarin to its curriculum and has also been recognised for promoting the Mandarin language and the Chinese culture.

Staff from ABP had previously visited the school to give some basic training in the lion dancing and it is hoped that this will further strengthen the connection between the business and the community.

The young students gained a greater insight into Chinese culture from learning the traditional lion dance which is combined with the moves of Kung Fu.

The Mandarin text books will be used by the school to help pupils further their learning and build skills in what is increasingly being seen as an important language for young people to learn.

Nancy Xu said: “We recently came to Kingsford Community School as part of our public consultation exercise before submitting our planning application to the council. We had heard about the Mandarin teaching taking place and to say thank you to the school for allowing us to use their premises, we thought we would give the lion dance costume and books to support the wonderful learning programme that’s going on here.”

Sir Robin Wales said:

“We’re pleased to be working with ABP to transform the Royal Docks. We know that they’re committed to engaging with our local community and delivering a range of benefits that will support the local economy and create opportunities for local people.”
